Aerobic vs. conventional septic in Texas.

Two fundamentally different approaches to on-site wastewater treatment. The right one depends on your soil, your lot, and sometimes your county. Here is how to tell the difference before the soil evaluation.

The most common question homeowners ask during the early stages of a septic project is some version of: which type do I need? The honest answer is that soil drives the decision more than preference does. But understanding the differences in cost, maintenance, and regulatory burden helps you walk into the process knowing what you are asking about.

How each system works

Conventional septic systems

A conventional system uses gravity and natural anaerobic bacterial processes to treat wastewater. Solids settle in the septic tank; clarified liquid effluent flows by gravity to a distribution system and then to a drainfield (also called an absorption field or leach field). In the drainfield, the effluent percolates through the soil, where additional treatment occurs before the water reaches groundwater.

Conventional systems have no electrical components, no mechanical aerators, and no disinfection requirements. They are the simplest and least expensive type of OSSF system to install and own. They work well on properties with adequate, well-draining soil and appropriate setbacks.

Aerobic treatment units (ATUs)

An aerobic treatment unit introduces oxygen into the treatment process using an air compressor or blower. The forced air promotes aerobic bacterial activity, which breaks down wastewater more thoroughly than anaerobic processes alone. The result is a higher-quality effluent that requires less absorption area in the drainfield or that can be dispersed via spray irrigation on the surface rather than subsurface drainfield trenches.

Aerobic systems have electrical components (the compressor), mechanical parts that wear over time, and a disinfection stage (typically chlorine tablets) to meet surface dispersal standards. They are more expensive to install and require ongoing maintenance to remain compliant.

When Texas requires an aerobic system

The choice is not always yours to make. Texas Administrative Code (TAC Chapter 285) sets the conditions under which a conventional drainfield cannot be permitted, and an alternative system must be used instead. An aerobic treatment unit is the most common alternative. The following conditions typically require moving to aerobic:

  • Soil permeability too slow. If the soil morphology analysis produces an LTAR below the threshold for a conventional drainfield of manageable size, the property cannot support conventional treatment.
  • Shallow bedrock or caliche. When limestone or caliche sits within 18 to 24 inches of the surface, a conventional drainfield has insufficient depth to function. Aerobic with drip irrigation can route effluent to a shallower subsurface zone.
  • Seasonal high water table. A water table that rises seasonally within the separation distance required by code eliminates the soil absorption zone needed for conventional systems.
  • Small lot with inadequate drainfield area. If the lot cannot physically accommodate the required drainfield square footage within setbacks, aerobic with spray or drip dispersal can reduce the land footprint significantly.
  • Sensitive receiving environment. Properties near surface water, floodplains, or Edwards Aquifer recharge zones may face additional restrictions that require the higher effluent quality an aerobic system provides.

The maintenance obligation: the real long-term cost difference

Texas law requires all aerobic system owners to maintain an active maintenance contract with a TCEQ-licensed maintenance provider. The provider must inspect the system at least four times per year, document chlorine levels and system operation, and report findings to the county. This is not optional; an expired maintenance contract puts the property owner in violation of state law and can trigger county enforcement.

The annual cost of a maintenance contract in Central Texas runs roughly $400 to $700 per year, depending on the provider and system complexity. Add chlorine tablet costs and occasional mechanical repairs (aerators, pumps, and floats do wear out), and the long-term ownership cost of an aerobic system is meaningfully higher than a conventional system that receives only periodic pump-outs.

This is not an argument against aerobic systems; for properties where soil conditions require them, an aerobic system is the correct, code-compliant solution. It is an argument for being honest about total cost of ownership when budgeting a new build or property purchase.

Spray irrigation: an aerobic system component that affects daily life

Many aerobic systems use a spray irrigation dispersal field to distribute treated effluent across the yard rather than into subsurface trenches. The spray heads are low-profile and cycle automatically, typically at night. The effluent is disinfected to a level that meets state standards for surface dispersal, but it is still wastewater-derived liquid.

Texas requires a buffer zone between spray heads and structures, property lines, and areas where people regularly gather. If you have children who play in the yard, pets, or a vegetable garden, you will need to understand the spray field layout and its boundaries. This is a practical quality-of-life consideration that some homeowners overlook when evaluating aerobic options.

Making the decision: what actually matters

If you have good soil and an adequate lot, a conventional system is almost always the right answer. It costs less to install, has no maintenance contract requirement, and has no mechanical components to fail.

If your soil evaluation reveals limiting conditions, an aerobic system is not a downgrade; it is the appropriate engineering solution for your site. The higher cost reflects a more capable system doing more work to compensate for what the soil cannot.

The decision should be made after the soil evaluation, not before it. Contractors who recommend one system type over another before seeing the soil data are guessing. A licensed site evaluator produces the data; a licensed designer interprets it; a licensed installer builds what the design specifies.
